Is new NFL rule hospitalizing players?
With a rash of concussions in the past few seasons, the National Football League decided last offseason to crack down on hits to the head. Sounds reasonable, right?It's possible, though, that the decision to penalize high hits has encouraged defenders to go low, often inflicting serious injuries.
In this video, Ravens safety Matt Elam avoids the above-the-belt hit, taking Green Bay wide receiver Randall Cobb out at the knees. Cobb left the game with what turned out to be a severe injury.
Some defensive players have said they feel they have to tackle at the knees, because they fear being penalized.
Is it possible that the NFL got this one wrong? It certainly wouldn't be the first time.
